After being eliminated from the Australian Open by Adrian Mannarino in the third round, Ben Shelton has now been deprived of the record for the fastest serve in the tournament by a 17-year-old in the Juniors Australian Open.

Tomask Berkieta has clocked a speed of 233 km/h with one of his serves in his match against Brazil’s Enzo Kohlmann de Freitas. With this, he now has the fastest serve at the 2024 Australian Open. So far, this record was held by Ben Shelton’s 228 km/h serve.

Ben Shelton is pretty well known for his fast serves. In the 2023 US Open, the youngster had the fastest serve, clocking 239 km/h in his fourth-round match against Tommy Paul, his fellow Nationality.

It was the second-fastest serve in the history of the tournament, missing Andy Roddick’s record by just 6 km/h. He could have had the fastest serve in two back-to-back Grand Slam events, but the 17-year-old has now denied him the opportunity. 

Talking about Tomask Berkieta, he is the third seed in the Australian Open juniors. He has so far beaten Thomas Faurel in the first round and Enzo Kohlmann de Freitas in the second match.

He has thus made it to the Round of 16 and will now face Hayden Jones from Australia. The Polish international is one of the favorites to win the Junior Australian Open this year. 

Ben Shelton is going through a rough patch 

American youngster Ben Shelton is currently suffering from a rough patch. He has not been able to perform brilliantly in any of the tournaments since the last Grand Slam of 2023.

He has played three tournaments at the Australian Open 2024 so far and has been downright poor in all of them. The 21-year-old lost to Roman Safiullin in the Round of 32 of the Brisbane International to begin his tour. 

In the ASB Classic, where he was the top seed, the youngster reached the semi-final but lost to Taro Daniel in straight sets eventually.

His loss to Adrian Mannarino in the 2024 Australian Open was also unexpected. The youngster will now have to hope that he performs well at Indian Wells and the Miami Open so that he can prove his haters wrong.
