Ben Shelton defeated Italian player Jannik Sinner after an epic 3-set match at the Shanghai Open that kept the audiences on the edge of their seats. After his win, Shelton did his signature ‘phone call’ celebration to celebrate his victory.

The ‘phone call’ celebration has been quite controversial for Shelton in the past few months. The first time it garnered attention was during the US Open final when he defeated Frances Tiafoe. Tennis fans thought his action to be disrespectful towards the fellow American. He was criticized over it on social media.

In his next-round match against Novak Djokovic, in the semi-finals, he lost in straight sets to the Serbian legend. The Serbian, in his sassy move, copied Shelton’s celebration fueling the controversy. In his post-match conference, Shelton responded to Djokovic’s celebration saying that he was flattered by his imitation.

On the other hand, Djokovic retaliated by saying he copied it because he found it ‘cool’. Some of Djokovic’s fans believed that the Serbian’s move was a result of Shelton’s rude behavior on the court.
