Ben Shelton has really been a major talker at the 2023 US Open. His journey came to an end as he was defeated in the semifinals by Novak Djokovic in straight sets on Friday. The 20-year-old has certainly had his moments this tournament. However, it was not meant to be against the 23-time Grand Slam title champion.
Ben Shelton has received some criticism this tournament for his attitude during his matches. During the first set in the semifinals, the American gave a cocky response after deceiving Novak Djokovic in a rally when the Serbian was serving for the set at 5-3. This did not go down well with the fans, who took to social media to express their collective disappointment.
Shelton committed way too many unforced errors in the first set, and it looked like he was completely overwhelmed by the occassion. Fans stated that the youngster needs to have his head in the game and be more settled in rallies against a player of Djokovic’s caliber.

Shelton fought his way back into the match in the third set, where he forced Djokovic into the tiebreaker. However, as one would expect, the Serbian’s experience came to the floor, as he outplayed the American in the tiebreaker. This would have been a great learning curve for the 20-year-old, who defeated the likes of Tommy Paul and Frances Tiafoe to reach the last four.
