Pro-equality advocate Billie Jean King voiced her disappointment against Greta Gerwig’s Oscar snub. With the Oscar nominations out, everyone was heavily expecting to see a couple of Barbie nominations.
However, when both director Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, who played Barbie, were snubbed, it came as a disappointment to fans.
Barbie was the highest-grossing and most celebrated movie of 2023, and it was almost inevitable that the director, Greta Gerwig, would be nominated for the Oscar. However, when this did not happen, pro-equality advocate and former tennis player Billie Jean King took to Instagram to express her disappointment against the same.
Really upset about Barbie being snubbed, especially in the best director category. The movie is absolutely brilliant, and Greta Gerwig is a genius.Said the former tennis player in her Instagram story
It was evident from her opinion that she was truly disappointed with the lack of representation for Barbie at the Oscars. It is not a secret that the American former World No. 1 tennis player is an advocate for women’s equality, especially in sports.
She had created history by defeating Bobby Riggs in the ‘Battle of the Sexes’ exhibition match back in 1973. To this date, it has since been celebrated by female tennis fans and players alike all over the globe because of its massive significance.
That’s not all; the former tennis pro is a major advocate for equal pay as well. Therefore, it was not a surprise when King expressed her disappointment at the lack of nominations for a movie like Barbie.
Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova join Billie Jean King in her frustration
Interestingly enough, Billie Jean King is not the only person fuming at the Barbie movie being snubbed at the Oscars. Other tennis players like Martina Navratilova and Christ Evert join the American in sharing their frustrations.
With the nominations for the 96th Oscars being announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Barbie fans worldwide were fuming.
The movie received eight nominations, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and two nominations for Best Original Song. However, the two most important categories, Best Director and Best Actress were ridden of the Barbie name.
I'm sorry; How is this possible?Asked Chris Evert on her Twitter, in absolute frustration.
She was also joined by Martina Navratilova.
What else is new?She said
With box office statistics showing Barbie to be the highest-grossing film, it was expected that Gerwig would be nominated for an Oscar. However surprisingly, this was not the case when the nominations were announced.
