Boris Becker breaks down during an interview recalling the horrors of prison and escape from murder threats

Boris Becker

Former World No. 1 Boris Becker was recently released from prison while serving time for hiding assets while filing for bankruptcy. The German great was found guilty by a jury in April this year and sentenced to 30 months in prison. However, he was released early and deported back to Germany after serving only eight months.

With reports emerging on the UK deciding to deport criminals back to their native in order to keep British prisons free, Becker was released. The 6-time Grand Slam champion had already agreed to an exclusive interview back home and it came with perks. Apart from getting the chance to explain his side, Becker was handed a big cheque and a private jet for his deportation.

Upon returning back home, Becker held his end of the bargain and was quick to give out an interview. Therein, he discussed his life in prison and how mentally challenging it was. Becker choked up recalling the difficult eight months in prison.

“The food in prison was mostly rice and potatoes. You just eat everything because you’re so hungry. When it was served, I was afraid. You don’t know what someone else is doing behind you,” said Becker during his interview SAT 1. He then went on to reveal that a fellow inmate had threatened him to pay him money or he would kill him.

Another inmate went on to narrate how he planned to hurt and kill Becker but by God’s grace, nothing happened to the German. “There were two moments when I was afraid for my life. You go mad in the cell. With the psyche it’s really very difficult,” added the former World No. 1.

Boris Becker was taken directly to prison after being found guilty. Becker is currently in a relationship with Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro who is a political risk analyst in London. While there’s a huge age difference between Becker and Monteiro, she has been his source of strength. Monteiro reportedly took care of Becker’s family while he was in prison.

“My children accepted that honestly and strongly. I told my girlfriend Lilian that she doesn’t have to wait for me, she is a young woman. She replied, ‘Don’t talk s***. We are a team!” added Becker during the interview. The 3-time Wimbledon winner also talked about how the time in prison gave him a certain revelation as well. “After ten days it got easier with the job. I was surprised that I teach these subjects,” said Becker revealing that he taught fellow inmates English and Mathematics.

Becker will not be returning to a German prison for his sentence. He will however be monitored closely till the duration of his sentence is complete. Meanwhile, he will be a notable absentee from Wimbledon as he is now banned from entering the UK for the next decade. His return will be at the mercy of the ministers in charge in 2032.
