Boris Becker, who was released after serving eight months of his prison sentence, is back in the tennis arena. In his conversation with The Guardian, Becker stated that the ‘new era’ of the tennis world has taken shape, with the new generation of players leading the tournaments.
After his incarceration, the six times Grand Slam champion is focused on building his ‘new life’ while not walking on the same path again. During his interview with the Guardian, Becker stated that the guard is changing with players like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune taking the lead.
“It’s already happened. Carlos Alcaraz became World No.1 after winning the US Open last year – that’s your evidence. There are plenty of other young players knocking on the door, including Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune. Then we have to mention the Russians – we don’t like to do so but we have to as they’re good enough,” he said.
On the question of Novak Djokovic, the 55-year-old cited that the Serbian is very much in the race for the French Open title. Becker, who coached Djokovic for three years, praised the Australian Open champion for his outgoing and generous personality.
“Clay is not his best surface, but in the last couple of years, he was able to pull it back together at the French. As long as he’s healthy, and as long as he wants to play, he is always going to be one of the favorites to win a grand slam,” Becker said.
Boris Becker wished Emma Raducanu a speedy recovery
Boris Becker witnessed great success during his teenage years. With becoming the youngest Wimbledon champion, the German went on to develop early wrist injuries. While sharing his experience with challenges in tennis, Becker wished Emma Raducanu a fast recovery.
The British No.1 withdrew from the French and Wimbledon champions after undergoing minor surgery on both her hands and her ankle. With her persisting injury problems, she was forced to skip her participation at the Madrid Open. Her Miami and Stuttgart Open appearances also led to an early exit from the tours. Raducanu has not achieved a single WTA Tour title following her grand triumph at the 2021 US Open championships.
In the conversation with the Guardian, Becker showed his admiration for the young player, while wishing her speedy recovery. He also added that Raducanu has the ability to overcome the challenges and win another Grand Slam in the future.
“The surgeries that she has had are, in my opinion, career-threatening. Having surgery on your playing wrist, and as a two-handed player, the other wrist – and then on your ankle – is tough to bear for a young woman,” he said.
Becker is working with Eurosport, as an expert with his program, Matchball Becker.
