Boris Becker coached Novak Djokovic for three years, so he knows the Serb and his mentality pretty well. Thus, it was easy for him to spot the brilliance of Novak’s gameplan against Daniil Mevedev. According to the German coach, one of the best traits of the 36-year old is to adapt to any situation and destabilize his opponents by the many weapons that he has available in his arsenal. Boris revealed that this is exactly what he used to win the US Open 2023 final against Daniil Medvedev.
“Novak’s great quality is adapting the game plan to the needs of the game: he always has a plan B, C, D… basically the whole alphabet. What impressed me the most about our collaboration? He was never satisfied. Never,” said Boris Becker.
Despite Djokovic’s win in the first set in the final against Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev was making things difficult for him as he was not leaving an inch of gap in his effort to oust the Serbian. After all, he had done that before in the US Open 2021 final, when Medvedev defeated Djokovic to win the first (and to date, the only) Grand Slam of his career.
In the second set, Daniil Medvedev had the lead for a long time, and it looked like he would make it even. However, Novak Djokovic adapted to the situation despite struggling due to the extreme conditions and made a sensational comeback to win the second set as well. After that, the match was pretty much won, as losing the second set apparently took a mental toll on Daniil Medvedev.
Novak Djokovic’s relationship with Boris Becker

Boris Becker, as mentioned earlier, was the coach of Novak Djokovic from 2013 to 2016. Those were the prime years of the Serb’s career and the two developed a very strong bond. In fact, Boris Becker calls Novak a brother from another mother.
Boris Becker has always been one of the biggest Novak Djokovic fans in the world of tennis and he is always the first to defend the Serbian whenever he is at the center of a controversy, as happens frequently. His sensational understanding of Novak Djokovic’s game and mindset, having coached him for 3 years, also helps him analyze the anecdotes about his games very well.
