Boris Becker, the former World No. 1 was released from prison earlier today in the UK. Having been sentenced to a prison term of two and a half years, Becker was let go after only eight months. Becker was first jailed in the Wandsworth Prison in South London before being moved from there.

Wandsworth was a category-B prison but Becker was shifted to a further lower-security prison. Becker was moved to the Huntercombe Prison in Oxfordshire where he served out the majority of his sentence before securing a release. The jail consists majorly of criminals from foreign countries awaiting their deportation.

Becker was sentenced for hiding his assets worth £ 2.5 million. He had received a suspended prison sentence in Germany as well for tax fraud in 2002. Becker had filed for bankruptcy but the discovery of hidden assets turned the case against him and he was convicted for fraud and jailed subsequently in April this year.

As Becker was a non-British inmate sentenced to more than a year-long jail term, he will be deported at the earliest. The German however is set to bring out his own version of the story through a documentary and an interview for which he has been reportedly paid a massive 6-figure sum.

For the 3-time Wimbledon winner who owned a house near the holy site of the All-England Club, he will not be allowed to enter the UK till 2032. The German will then again have to re-apply for a visa and it will be upon the government’s discretion to allow him to step foot in the UK. Nevertheless, Becker’s family was happy to see him walk out of the prison with his mother calling it the best Christmas present.

Becker’s total debt had crossed £50 million. While he applied for bankruptcy, the discrepancy in having other assets is what got him into prison. The entire case will however be soon seen in a documentary that’s been produced by Apple TV. It will be a two-part documentary and had been filmed for three years prior to his prison term and will give an insight into the mental challenges Becker faced.
