In a recent interview with CNN’s Christine Amanpour, Boris Becker, the 55-year-old tennis star, expressed his gratitude for being alive after serving time in prison. The athlete had earlier revealed to German broadcaster Sat. 1, shortly after his release, that one of the inmates attempted to kill him, as reported by CNN. Following his involvement in a bankruptcy case in 2017, Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. He served eight months of this sentence at Huntercombe Prison in the UK before being released in December of last year.
Boris Becker shared his experience of being imprisoned and the value of freedom. According to the athlete, prison life is entirely different from the outside world, and one realizes the worth of freedom only after being incarcerated. He further added that he is happy to be alive and free, three months after his release.
The six-time Grand Slam champion also admitted that prison life can be dangerous, and he watched a few movies to prepare himself before entering the prison. However, he was still taken aback by the reality and found it to be a genuinely punishing experience. Boris Becker revealed that his time in prison was a continuous struggle for survival, with every day being a challenge.
He added that while there is ample time for introspection and self-pity, one has to push past those feelings quickly and focus on the next day’s survival. According to a report by CNN, the tennis star recounted to Sat. 1 that an inmate, who had already served 16 years for killing two people at 18, had tried to kill him. Becker recalled feeling extremely shaken after the incident and shouted out for help, which prompted other inmates to come to his aid and stop the attacker.
The shocking story of Boris Becker’s downfall and how he lost his $185m fortune
Boris Becker‘s journey from a teenage Wimbledon champion to a bankrupt prisoner at the age of 54 is one of the most remarkable stories in the world of sports. A new documentary on Apple TV+ tracks how the tennis prodigy from Germany turned into a high-rolling playboy who spent around $185 million on women and a lavish lifestyle. However, his extravagant lifestyle eventually caught up with him, leading to a massive debt that pushed him into bankruptcy, as reported by The Sun.
According to the article, Boris Becker breaks down during an interview for the docu-series ‘Boom! Boom! The World Vs Boris Becker’, just two days prior to his sentencing last year. The tennis star was convicted of transferring large sums of money unlawfully and concealing assets after being declared bankrupt.
Boris Becker, famously known as Boom Boom for his strong serve, made history by winning the Wimbledon men’s championship at the age of 17, making him the youngest-ever champion in 1985. He went on to become a world No. 1 and won a total of six grand slams, including two more Wimbledon titles in 1986 and 1989. Despite his on-court success, his self-confidence also led to his downfall, which caused him to declare bankruptcy and face legal troubles. His rumored addiction to sleeping pills and sex reportedly affected his tennis career.
