Rafael Nadal’s chance to complete a calendar grand slam is over as he withdraws from his semifinal against Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal injury. Nadal was 19-0 in grand slams this year and was looking to win his 3rd Wimbledon title but to his dismay, he won’t even be able to step onto the court to play his semifinal match.

Nadal was injured in the quarterfinal against Taylor Fritz and even took a medical timeout. He wasn’t at his 100% but still continued and eventually crossed the finish line in 5 sets just on account of his grit and determination. He later revealed that he had thoughts of retiring mid-match but the crowd gave him the energy to continue.

Nadal, after his quarterfinal, wasn’t confident about playing in the semifinal but was adamant about giving it a shot. He had scans the next day which revealed that he had a 7mm tear in his abdomen. Nadal practiced for about an hour but later decided to hold a press conference where he revealed his decision.

The Spaniard said that he couldn’t win two more matches with the injury and hence it doesn’t make sense to play. “It doesn’t make sense to play, injury will get worse,” Nadal said.

In the press conference, Nadal said that he can’t serve with the right intensity and has restricted movement. As a mark of respect to himself, he doesn’t want to go out there without having a chance to win.

“I can’t win 2 matches like this. I can’t serve at the right speed. With respect to myself, I don’t want to go out there without having the chance to win,” he said. “I made this decision because I can’t be competitive and win the next two matches. I don’t want to make things worse, but I am very sad.”
