Coco Gauff took a savage dig at her haters in her on-court interview after winning the 2023 US Open. The teenager made history by defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final to win her first-ever Grand Slam. With that, she also became the first American teenager to win a Women’s Singles Grand Slam since Serena Williams. She also became the first American teenager to win a Women’s Singles Grand Slam in this century.
The 19-year-old said after her match that many people had doubted her capabilities in the recent past and this win will probably shut them up once and for all. Adding to that, she also said that this is just the beginning and that she’s ‘burning so bright’ right now, hinting that she has just begun her journey to greatness.
“Thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me. A month ago, I won a 500 title, people said I would stop at that. Two weeks ago, I won a Masters title, and people said that was as big as it was going to get. Three weeks later I’m here with this trophy right now. To those who thought they were putting water in my fire, they were adding gas to it. Now I’m burning so bright right now,” Coco Gauff said in her trophy presentation speech.
The 19-year-old defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final despite being set down. She made an epic comeback in the last two sets and did not give the Belarusian any chance to get a proper footing in the match. The way she completely unnerved the current World No. 1 shows that Coco is destined to achieve greatness.
Coco Gauff credits her father for her dream run
Coco Gauff has been simply phenomenal this season so far. She won her first silverware of the season in the Women’s doubles category at the Qatar Open alongside her partner Jessica Pegula. Later, they went on to win the Miami Open as well but ended up losing the Madrid Open and Italian Open finals back to back.
Her first individual silverware of the season came in the Citi Open where she beat Maria Sakkari in the final. She then went on to win the Cincinnati Open by defeating Karolina Muchova and has now won the first Grand Slam of her career. She did well in all the other majors too. This goes on to show that the teenager is really destined for greatness and has a long way to go.
She was emotional after winning the title and cried while hugging her parents, this is what it means for her. “He was the first person I saw. That was the first time I saw my dad cry. At the French Open, he claims he wasn’t crying. But today, I saw it. I rarely see my mom cry either. That moment. I’ll never forget that ever. I’m so happy. That man has supported me through so much. People always tried to tear us apart, saying he didn’t need to be in my box or he didn’t need to coach me anymore. Little do they know, he’s the reason I won this match,” said Coco Gauff while talking to ESPN after winning the US Open.
The last few months were simply brilliant for Coco Gauff. She had only a WTA 250 trophy in her cabinet before she won the Citi Open. Coco had a 7-0 record against Iga Swiatek, she finally beat her in the Cincinnati Open where she won the title as well. In simple words, this has been a ‘Coco Summer’ with WTA 500, WTA 1000, and a Grand Slam title.
