Coming back from an injury, Simona Halep started the season by winning the Melbourne Summer Set and followed it up by reaching the Round of 16 of the Australian Open. She then made it to the semifinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships and then reached the semifinals at Indian Wells too. On clay, she finished runner-up at the Madrid Open and also reached the quarterfinal of the French Open before losing to Iga Swiatek. At the Canadian Open this week, she defeated Asia Muhammad in the second round, Camila Giorgi in the Round of 16, and Yulia Putintseva in the quarterfinals before eventually beating Jessica Pegula in the semifinals in three sets 2-6,6-3,6-4.

Beatriz Haddad Maia is currently in the form of her life. She had a very ordinary start to the season and used to play at the WTA 125k level until the clay season. She bowed out of the second round of the French Open but ever since then, she has been unstoppable. On grass, she won the Nottingham Open and followed it up with another title triumph at the Birmingham Classic. She then reached the semifinal at Eastbourne but got knocked out of the opening round at Wimbledon. This week in Toronto, she defeated Martina Trevisan in the opening round and then got the better of US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez. In the Round of 16, she stunned World No.1 Iga Swiatek and followed it up by beating Belinda Bencic in the last 8 and Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals in straight sets 6-4,7-6(7).
