Coming back from an injury, Simona Halep started the season by winning the Melbourne Summer Set and followed it up by reaching the Round of 16 of the Australian Open. This week in Toronto, she defeated Martina Trevisan in the opening round and then got the better of US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez. In the Round of 16, she stunned World No.1 Iga Swiatek and followed it up by beating Belinda Bencic in the last 8 and Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals in straight sets 6-4,7-6(7).

This will be the fourth meeting between the two. Halep leads the H2H 2-1. They met at Birmingham earlier this year where Haddad Maia won in three sets.
