Athletes are usually caught in the crossfire of various spiraling moments which make them lose their focus on their game and also become meme material on social media. Carlos Alcaraz was almost caught in such a crossfire during his semi-final match of the US Open against Daniil Medvedev.

Alcaraz was visibly frustrated with himself during his match against the Russian. After a close first set which was won by Daniil, the world number 1 completely lost his rhythm during the second set and lost two early sets against the Russian. During the crossover of the second set, the Spaniard was seen fuming and was very close to smashing his racket. He did not have any answers to Medvedev and eventually lost the match. I think I started the match pretty well. It was a close first set. In the tiebreak, you know, after 3-All in the tiebreak, I, let’s say, I lose my mind. I make three or four points without control. I totally lose my mind on that set. It was really tough for me to handle it,” he said in post-match press conference.

I almost threw the racket to floor, but I just control myself just be in the moment, but it was tough for me to stay calm,” Alcaraz added.

After the most awaited semi-final clash between Carlos Alcaraz and Daniil Medvedev, the Russian played better than perfect to overcome his biggest challenge so far. Alcaraz put up a commendable fight, but he did not have answers to Medvedev’s punishing pace. The US Open has been a learning experience for the youngster who has still not failed to prove why he is the rising star of tennis. The Russian now advances to the final stage of the US Open against Novak Djokovic.

“When Novak loses, he’s never the same after. So he’s different. It’s just a different mentality. That’s why he has 23 Slams. So I have to use it, knowing he’ll be 10 times better than he was that day. If I want to beat him, I have to be 10 times better than I was that day. That’s what I’ll try to do,” said Daniil Medvedev in the post match press conference when asked how he’ll use the 2021 US Open final win against Djokovic this time.

A lot is at stake in the US Open finals. While World No. 3 Medvedev looks for revenge against Djokovic, the Serb looks to make his return year memorable by winning his 24th Grand Slam. The Russian knows that he has to play his best tennis to win his second Grand Slam and to steal the World No. 1 rank from Djokovic. The US Open has been a great tournament, with many surprises along the way and is all set to end with a bang, with the two dominant players battling it out for the trophy.
