What was expected to be a dog battle turned out to be a one-sided affair. World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz streamlined his way into the Wimbledon finals as he defeated World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in the semis of the 2023 Wimbledon. Both men were playing in their first-ever Wimbledon semi-finals and it is Alcaraz who makes the finals with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win.

Neither of them had a proven track record on grass prior to this year’s Wimbledon. Well, Alcaraz did come in with the title in Queen’s Club and Medvedev’s only grass title came at the 2021 Mallorca Championships. The two US Open champs have however silenced critics showing they do have the portfolio to become all-courters.

The third set was the closest fought set between the two players. Medvedev had the pressure of losing in straight-sets while Alcaraz did not want to bottle his lead. Alcaraz raced to a 3-0 lead before Medvedev made it 3-2 to make things interesting. Alcaraz did not give the window to Medvedev as he broke him to make it 4-2.

The Russian however kept the pressure by securing a break to make it 4-3. He could not however hold on to the tempo. Alcaraz broke to make it 5-3 and get the chance to serve out the match. After squandering multiple match points in his previous match, Alcaraz needed just one against Medvedev. Playing out a nervy rally, Alcaraz ran the length of the court and secured the win with a slap of a forehand rushing from the baseline to the net as the Centre Court was forced to stand on its feet.

Carlos Alcaraz now faces the biggest challenge on Grass

With a dreamy run so far this year at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz now has to stand the toughest test any player can have on grass. Facing him in the finals would be Novak Djokovic, the four-time defending champion at the Championships. The Serb overcame Italian youngster Jannik Sinner in straight-sets to book his spot in his fifth consecutive finals at Wimbledon.

Djokovic is going for his eighth Wimbledon title which could see him equal Roger Federer‘s all-time tally. A 24th Major will see him match Margaret Court‘s all-time Grand Slam tally. He can however boast of winning all his titles in the Open Era. As for Alcaraz, he would lift just his second title and his first-ever at Wimbledon joining an illustrious list to win the Grand Slam title.

The winner also has the added bonus of becoming the World No. 1 on Monday when the rankings are updated. Medvedev was also in contention but that needed both Alcaraz and Djokovic to lose before the fourth round. It is now all between Nole and Carlitos, winner takes home both the trophy and the rank.
