Jannik Sinner defeated world No. 3 Daniil Medvedev at the China Open in Beijing despite having suffered six consecutive losses against the Russian superpower. This undoubtedly adds a new dash of excitement to the Italian’s victory. However, the rising Spanish tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, doesn’t seem fazed by the unexpected conclusion.
At a press conference in Shanghai, Alcaraz remarked that he had seen glimpses of the match here and there. The Spaniard said he wasn’t surprised in the least as he knew the Italian’s ability and level. The 20-year-old praised his rival and said that Sinner was one of the best players in the world and could beat anyone.
Alcaraz further emphasized that the final was not surprising for him despite knowing that Sinner had lost to Medvedev six times before. The former No.1 believes that sometimes one can do better by observing your opponent and game and noting what did you wrong in the previous matches.
He said, “I saw a little, not all of it. It doesn’t surprise me at all. I know Jannik’s ability. I know his level. He is one of the best players in the world & he can beat anyone. The final does not surprise me. I know he lost six times in a row to Daniil, but sometimes you can be better by studying your opponent’s game & what he did wrong in previous matches to be better & beat him. I’m very happy for him. The level he was playing at was incredible.”

Carlos Alcaraz on his defeat to Jannik Sinner
In a post-match interview, Carlos Alcaraz, the current world No.2, discussed his recent loss to Jannik Sinner at the China Open semi-final. The encounter between the two budding tennis stars drew a lot of attention because of their tremendous potential and the quality of their play.
Alcaraz said, “Obviously he played really good tennis, as well. I had to change a little bit my game. I couldn’t do that. I tried to play more tactically. I didn’t do well in that part. That’s something that I have to learn about if I want to beat Jannik. This is something that in the second set I was out of my mind. I just complain a lot, something that is really difficult to play your best if you’re complaining or you’re mad at yourself. That’s what it happened.”
The match between Alcaraz and Sinner featured intense tennis, with Sinner eventually winning in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-1. Despite the defeat, Alcaraz exhibited his skill and determination, pushing Sinner to the limit in the second set and displaying glimpses of his enormous potential.
