Carlos Alcaraz has reclaimed the ATP World No. 1 spot after his successful debut at the Italian Open. The Spaniard will be entering Roland Garros as number one, ahead of Novak Djokovic. However, despite the ongoing celebrations, he is more focused on enhancing his overall performance for the upcoming Grand Slam.
The US Open champion is ‘unstoppable’ in his current state. He won the Indian Wells Masters trophy after defeating the World No.3, Daniil Medvedev. With the start of his clay campaign, the 20-year-old achieved back-to-back titles at Barcelona and Madrid. With 20 wins on the clay surface, the Spanish player is more than ready for the upcoming championship in Paris.
Alcaraz registered his first victory at the Italian Open after defeating Albert Ramos-Vinolas in straight sets. On the question of reaching the number one rank, the two- times Madrid champion was quite ecstatic with his achievement.
“It’s great you know to be world No. 1, you know, in Roland-Garros, in a Grand Slam, it’s something crazy”, he said during his on-court interview.
“I couldn’t believe it years ago. I am really happy, but for me, it doesn’t change too much to be world No. 1 or the No. 2 seed”, Alcaraz said.
The Spaniard added that with the ongoing celebrations, his attention is more fixed to improve his overall skills and build up momentum for the upcoming French Open.
“I just focus on the tournament, on my game, on every match, and that’s something that I try not to think about. But of course, it’s something great to be No. 1”, he further added.
Alcaraz also reached the semi-finals of Miami Open but faced a tough loss at the hands of Jannik Sinner. At the Rome Open, he will be facing Hungarian player, Fabian Marozsan, in the round of 32.
Carlos Alcaraz is heading towards another Grand Slam title at the Roland Garros
With the French Open just a few days away, Carlos Alcaraz will be entering the Grand Slam as World No.1. After missing the Australian Open due to injury issues, the Spaniard is depicting his ‘best form’ for claiming his second trophy at the championship.
The US Open champion has begun his clay campaign with his spectacular triumphs at Barcelona and Madrid Open. With his dominance on the clay surface, he has entered the race of the French Open as the leading favorite. Novak Djokovic also cited Alcaraz as ‘the man he wishes to beat on the clay court’. On the other hand, Alcaraz is receiving praise for his ‘explosive’ style and ‘adaptive’ approach in tennis. Patrick Mouratoglou, the star coach called the Spaniard as an ‘all-court’ player while clay being is strong pursuit.
“Maybe I would give him a little advantage on clay than hard because he has some weapons that are deadly on clay. The drop shot, and he’s a master in drop shots. His kick serve which is one of the best, if not the best, on tour, and his forehand. On clay you have more time to turn around the backhands to hit forehands and dictate with his shots”, he said through his social media.
Boris Becker, the former World No.1, also heaped praises for the Spanish player. He credited him as the one who is ‘rewriting’ history with his record-breaking accomplishments.
“Carlos plays tennis very differently”, he said on Eurosport. “Whoever dares take on a rally against him has lost anyway. We used to say that about [Rafael] Nadal and [Novak] Djokovic. But Alcaraz has even more punch and even more topspin in his shots. That’s why he’s rewriting tennis history”, Becker further added.
Alcaraz will be facing a challenge from the 23-year-old, Fabian Marozsan, in the round of 32 at the Italian Open.
