It is official! Carlos Alcaraz will end the year 2022 as World No.1 in the ATP Rankings. When the 2022 ATP Finals tournament was about to start, his World No.1 spot was in jeopardy. Stefanos Tsitspas and Rafael Nadal were contenders for his spot. Added to this, is his absence from the ATP Finals tournament due to an unfortunate injury.
If Tsitsipas could win the tournament without losing a single match, he would have earned the No.1 ranking. But he lost his first Group stage match against Novak Djokovic. The second contender for the throne, the 2022 French Open champion lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime to put his ATP Finals campaign in tatters.
Hence, Carlos Alcaraz will remain as World No.1 going into the next ATP Season. Eminent sports journalist Jose Morgado the news on Twitter. “19y6m Carlos Alcaraz will finish 2022 as the year-end world number one. The youngest EVER,” his caption read.
He also shared the list of players who attained the World No.1 rank at a very young age. Some of the biggest names of tennis who awed tennis fans all around the world are on that list.
Carlos Alcaraz must be very proud of his achievements this season. It is a disappointment that he had to sit out of the season-ending tournament due to an injury. However, it is expected that he will come back next year with a lot of steam and continue to perform exceedingly well.
A Great Finish to an excellent season for Carlos Alcaraz
Carlos Alcaraz has had a fantastic season this year. He won 5 ATP singles titles which include the US Open title. He started his season with an impressive performance in the Australian Open. However, he was knocked out of the tournament by Matteo Berrettini.
He followed this disappointment with a triumph in Rio Open. He defeated Diego Schwartzman in the final. He then featured in the Davis Cup for Spain. He reached the semi-finals round of the Indian Wells Open but was defeated by Rafael Nadal.
He subsequently won the Miami Open, Barcelona Open, and the Madrid Open in the run-up to the French Open. He was looking impressive at Roland Garros but lost to Alexander Zverev in the quarter-finals. He could not do much at Wimbledon and lost to Jannik Sinner in the fourth round.
The 19-year-old subsequent final matches in Hamburg and Umag. He won his career’s first Grand Slam title when he won the US Open defeating Casper Ruud. He attained the World No.1 ranking after his US Open triumph. As the news broke out that Carlos Alcaraz will finish the year as world No.1, many reactions came in. Here are a few reactions.
Carlos Alcaraz is on top of the world. He would have loved to end the year by winning the 2022 ATP Finals tournament. However, that did not happen. He must be equally brilliant in tennis next year as well to win the four Grand Slams and other tournaments, to qualify for the ATP Finals 2023.
