Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev will be heading into the 2023 US Open as the third seed. The Russian boasts a 49-11 record this season and has been in impeccable form. He has a good record in the US Open and on hard courts in general, as he was the US Open 2021 winner, which he won by beating Novak Djokovic 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. It was also his only Grand Slam win to date.
Medvedev has been pretty consistent so far this season. He made it to the quarterfinals of the Montreal Open and the semi-finals of Wimbledon, where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz, who ultimately went on to win the Grand Slam.
Besides, he won the ATP Rotterdam Open, the Qatar Open, the Dubai Tennis Championship, the Miami Open, and the Italian Open. His only disappointing performance this season came in the French Open, where he suffered a first-round exit against Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild. This strong resume instantly makes the 27-year-old a favorite in the upcoming US Open.
Daniil Medvedev handed a difficult road in US Open 2023
Daniil Medvedev will take on Hungarian tennis player Attila Balázs in the first round, which is expected to be an easy match for him. Following that, he will either face Max Purcell or Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the second round. If all goes well and he qualifies for the third round unhindered, which he is expected to do, Medvedev will face either Borna Coric, Sebastian Baez, or Kei Nishikori, who has made a brilliant comeback recently.
In the fourth round, he will face either Alex de Minaur or Nicolas Jarry, the current Chilean No. 1. Round 5, i.e., the quarter-finals, is where things start getting really difficult for Daniil Medvedev. He will either face Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov, or Hubert Hurkacz, who are all very talented opponents.
If Medvedev qualifies for the semi-finals, he will be facing either Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner. The Russian has very contrasting records against both of these opponents. While in recent seasons Medvedev has struggled against World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, he has had a great record against Jannik Sinner, whom he defeated in two finals.
In the end, he will face any one of Novak Djokovic, Holger Rune, or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final of the US Open if he makes it that far. Thus, it is evident that Daniil Medvedev has an immensely tough road to the final in the upcoming tournament, and it will be a great challenge for him.
