World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz is into the semi-finals of the 2023 Wimbledon after his win over Holger Rune. The Spaniard beat the Dane 7-6(3), 6-4, 6-4. He held match points in the eighth game but could not close it on the first attempt as Rune made a strong defense.

The duo played an extended first set that went beyond the one-hour mark. Alcaraz however came clutch in the tiebreaker to draw the first blood. The second set remained a close affair in the first few games before Alcaraz earned the crucial break to take the lead. The third set was even closer but Alcaraz was too good to mess it up.

He then held triple match point but Rune managed to defend one. At 40-15, Rune managed to defend another match point putting all the pressure on the Spaniard. Alcaraz eventually won it on a second serve as Rune’s shot was long and Alcaraz raised his hands before letting out a loud scream after shaking hands with Rune and the umpire.

Alcaraz during his on-court interview, talked about his nerves coming into the match, especially against Rune, and went on to say, “Someone the same age as me playing a great level. It was tough to play against him but once you get into the quarter-finals there’s no friends. You have to be focused on yourself and I think I did great in that part.”

While Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune battled on the Centre Court, spectators on the No. 1 Court enjoyed a different thriller. Daniil Medvedev and Christopher Eubanks went the distance in an entertaining quarter-final clash. Medvedev won the first set but lost the next two. He had to rally hard to get home with a 6-4, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 57 minutes.

So far on the Tour, Alcaraz and Medvedev have met twice. They first met in the 2021 Wimbledon in the second round where Medvedev won in straight-sets. Carlitos returned the favor in the finals of the 2023 Indian Wells Masters finals as their head-to-head stands tied at 1-1. A semi-final at Wimbledon would be a good place for either of them to take the lead once again.

With the conclusion of this match, the semi-finals for Gentlemen’s Singles are locked in. Four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic will take on Jannik Sinner while Medvedev and Alcaraz will lock the horns. While the semis for ladies will be played tomorrow, the men get a rest day and will play the semis on Friday before Sunday’s finals.
