World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev has shown Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz the door at the ongoing US Open in the semi-finals after a four-set-thriller. Most of the fans predicted Carlos to defend his US Open title this year as every tennis fanatic was expecting a rematch of the Wimbledon Championship at the US Open final. But the Russian came out as a surprise package delivering a memorable performance sending the young gun out of the title contention.

Just moments after losing out on the semis, Alcaraz confirmed his unavailability at the upcoming Davis Cup where he could have faced Novak Djokovic yet again as Spain is clubbed in the same group as Serbia. At the post-match conference, he didn’t sound quite ambitious about leading his national team at the tournament starting next week in Valencia.

Carlos said, “At the moment I need to rest, but let’s see how I wake up tomorrow.” Even the Spanish Tennis Federation released a statement later on the day which read, “Albert Ramos replaces Carlos Alcaraz in the Spanish Tennis Team that will play the Group Phase of the Davis Cup Finals this coming week in Valencia” and also adjudged David Ferrer as the new captain of the side.

Spain has been amongst the most dominant countries in the history of the Davis Cup having lifted the trophy a total of six times with their last title coming way back in 2019 when Rafael Nadal led them to a crucial 2-0 victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime‘s Canada. But this year they have yet another chance to clinch the title as they are set to play Serbia, South Korea, and Czech Republic in the group stage.

Carlos Alcaraz was elected as the captain of the Spanish side but pulled out of the competition just a week away with veteran Albert Ramos-Vinolas replacing the star man.

He will join the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut, Pedro Martinez, and Marcel Granollers in the hope of bringing the Davis Cup back to Spain with David Ferrer as the new captain.
