Carlos Alcaraz has had a rough start to the 2024 tour and he recently talked about it ahead of his round of 16 match in the Indian Wells. The Spaniard said that the past couple of months have been really difficult for him and that he has been trying to better himself and regain his confidence every single day.

He particularly emphasized the South American swing and said that his poor performance there clearly had an impact on his psyche and overall confidence. Carlos Alcaraz headed into the Buenos Aires Open as the defending champion and he should’ve won the trophy without any difficulty as the competition in the tournament was really low.

However, he lost to Nicolas Jarry in the semifinal to crash out of the ATP 250 event unexpectedly. Unfortunately, the South American swing had more things in store for him. The World No. 2 suffered a grade 2 ankle sprain during his first-round match in the Rio Open against Thiago Monteiro that hindered his training for about two weeks.

Alcaraz said, addressing the reporters:

It was difficult months for me. My confidence went down a little bit. Not after Australia but in the South American swing. After Buenos Aires, I didn't play good tennis. I have been struggling during the practice every day, you know, trying to keep my confidence high or as high as I can. Trying to be myself every day.

Carlos Alcaraz claims his victory against Felix Auger Aliassime added a lot to his confidence

Talking about his recent performances in the Indian Wells so far, the Spaniard agreed that he struggled a bit in round two against Matteo Arnaldi. He lost the first set but eventually went on to win the match 6-7(7), 6-0, 6-1. However, his performance against Felix Auger Aliassime was much better. He beat the Canadian 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets and it really helped the Spaniard gain his confidence back.

Speaking about the same, Alcaraz added:

After the first round I was struggling a little bit in the first set. I didn't play my tennis, but I found the good parts to start playing a little bit better, and today was a really good match since the beginning until the last ball. So it was really helpful for my confidence and for my tennis.

The upcoming match between Carlos Alcaraz and Fabian Marozsan in the round of 16 will indeed be very interesting. The two of them have only played one match against each other till date and the Spaniard lost that encounter, at the 2023 Italian Open.
