World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz was also among the players to have been put under the radar at an event organized by the management of the Cincinnati Open. With players being asked to comment on their old photographs, Alcaraz was shown a picture that contained his childhood photo with young Holger Rune standing alongside him, which took him down memory lane.
The picture was from the time when the two stars were still playing in youth tennis leagues, with both of them playing alongside each other as doubles partners. Now known to many as the next-gen stars, Carlos was really happy after seeing the image of him sharing his bond with Rune and how much they helped each other in their journey to the top.
He said holding the picture, “I did nothing more than playing tennis. We were in Les Petits, playing doubles with Rune. I think everybody knows that a lot of viewers came out, it was under 12 so were 12. Yeah, it was 2015 if I am right, yeah playing doubles.” The star duo was playing against the doubles duo of Lovre Erceg and Montenegro’s Danilo Raicevic.
How has the battle between Rune and Alcaraz fared so far?
Carlos and Holger have been rated by many pundits and specialists as the future of the sport. Many expect them to be a part of the next Big 3 alongside Jannik Sinner, but unlike Alcaraz, Rune still hasn’t had much success to showcase. Having played with each other in the youth league, they first met against one another at the ATP Next Gen Finals, where Rune lost to the Spaniard by 4-3, 4-2, 4-0.
Their first major clash came at the 2022 Paris Masters, which was a battle worth watching. Rune stunned the entire tennis world by defeating the favorite, Alcaraz, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-6, with Carlos retiring midway through the match. In the recent 2023 Wimbledon clash between them in the quarterfinals, Alcaraz gave the Dane absolutely no chance whatsoever, beating him clearly by 7-6, 6-4, 6-4.
