With the win over Casper Ruud in the final of the US Open 2022, Alcaraz became the youngest No. 1 in the history of the ATP Rankings at the age of 19 years, 4 months and 6 days. He also became the first teenager in the Open Era to top the men’s rankings and the youngest men’s US Open champion since Pete Sampras in 1990. Since then the number one spot has been exchanged between Alcaraz and Djokovic. The Spaniard has shown that he can handle the tag of number one as he won the Wimbledon as the first seed.

Talking about the pressure of the Defending Champion tag, Alcaraz said, “I try not to think about that. This practice week, I try to do exactly the same thing that I did last year, trying to practice the same way that I’m going to play, and focus on that. I’m not focus on the defending champion, the points, whatever. I’m just focus on show my best level, try to improve in every practice, and let’s see how is going to be the tournament.”

Alcaraz began his preparation for the defence of his title with a practice session alongside Jannik Sinner. Carlos Alcaraz will begin his title defence against Dominik Koepfer and could meet sixth seed Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals in what would be a rematch of their epic 2022 New York clash.
