Former World No. 1 and Eurosport analyst Boris Becker stated in a recent interview that Carlos Alcaraz’s Wimbledon victory against reigning champion and heavy favorite Novak Djokovic is undeniably a ‘change of guard’ from the Big 3 to a new champion in the form of Alcaraz.

Becker believes that the victory signals the end of the Big 3’s dominance and that it will usher in a new era of tennis with newer names dominating the circuit. However, Becker was quick to point out that while Alcaraz is going to be one of the names to dominate the tennis circuit in the future, the level of dominance exuded by the Big 3 will never be forgotten.

“Where is tennis going? Roger, Rafa, and Novak, there will probably never be such triumphs again,” said Becker. “Three players have won 20 or even more Grand Slams. In my time, Pete Sampras did the impossible at 14, but now you have three players who have won over 20 majors. And, of course, they have also ensured incredible popularity, worldwide.”

Boris Becker continued, claiming that if that record for the Grand Slam tally is to be broken, it will be done by Carlos Alcaraz.

“Who can take the scepter? We’ve mentioned the name several times. Carlos Alcaraz has taken it over, and I think the world will thank him that we have seen such a likable, refreshing, almost innocent-looking young player from Spain, who does it as if it were the most natural thing in the world.”

With his epic Wimbledon victory, the limelight is definitely on Alcaraz to dominate tennis for years to come, and for good reason. He is the next person born after 1987 to hold multiple slam titles, a staggering 16 years of difference. No player born in the 1990s has achieved the feat. Players such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev have phenomenal records on the tour, but they are yet to challenge the dominance of the Big 3 in the Grand Slams like Alcaraz has.

The 20-year-old Spaniard is touted to win many more big titles. But with the advent of players such as Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz will surely face stiff competition. With that being said, it remains to be seen what else the young No. 1 will set out to achieve in an already stellar 2023 season.
