The Las Vegas exhibition match became another casualty of the latest injury of the Spanish young sensation Carlos Alcaraz. The 19-year-old suffered yet another injury during the Rio Open final against British player Cameron Norrie which also cost him the title in the ATP 500 event. Earlier, the 2022 US Open champion pulled out from the Mexican Open as well.
The exhibition was originally set against Alcaraz’s compatriot Rafael Nadal but the 22-time Grand Slam champion is already out of action because of his Australian Open injury. The match was scheduled at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena this weekend.
After the withdrawal of Nadal, consideration for a new opponent was underway. Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz were the ones, who would do battle for the chance to play the World No. 2 Alcaraz. But Alcaraz’s latest setback forced the event to be scrapped altogether.
The tournament announced the bitter news just four days before the schedule. Alcaraz was no less disheartened either. “I am very disappointed that I can’t play this weekend in Las Vegas and put on a great show for my fans,” he said. “I will return to the court when I’m 100 percent and look forward to joining Rafa at MGM Grand for a match in the near future.”
Carlos Alcaraz’s injury woes returned during the Rio Open
The Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz was on a comeback trail after being away from the court for almost three months. Just before the 2023 Australian Open, Alcaraz suffered an abdominal injury forcing him to withdraw from the event. He made a successful return by winning the title in the Argentina Open after defeating Cameron Norrie in the final.
Now the fresh injury dashed his hopes for the coming few weeks. Alcaraz announced the news to his fans earlier via social media. “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in @AbiertoTelcel. I have a grade 1 strain in my right hamstring that will keep me out for several days, according to the tests we did this morning,” he wrote.
I’m really sad I can’t compete here, but now it’s time to think about recovering and being ready as soon as possible. I hope to see you all soon!.” Further details of the diagnosis are yet to come out as the Spaniard faces the risk of missing out few important events of the USA leg of the Tour.
