Casper Ruud crashed out of the US Open after a devastating defeat against China’s Zhizhen Zhang. The 3 hours and 19 minutes-long match ended with Zhang becoming the first Chinese player to defeat a top-five seeded player. Ruud lost the match 4-6, 7-5, 2-6,6-0,2-6.
The 24-year-old has also dropped in the ATP rankings from 5 to 9. He is still in the top ten. Unfortunately, it may change soon again. Alexander Zverev, who has risen in rankings to the 10th position from the 12th recently, He might overtake the Norwegian player if he plays well at the US Open. He currently stands at 10th with 2715 points, while Ruud, at 9th, has accumulated 3560 points.
Each round of the US Open awards different points for victories. The ATP and WTA have different systems for rewarding points. In ATP, for making it to the third round, players are awarded 90 ATP points. An appearance in the 4th round will get them 180 ATP points. All quarterfinalists gain a 360-point boost. The stakes become higher with 720 points in the semi-finals. Naturally, the most points are earned at the finals, with both finalists gaining 2000 points.
If Zverev wants to overtake Ruud, he will have to make it to the semi-finals of the US Open. There is a chance that the Norwegians may exit the top ten.
Casper Ruud faces crushing defeat at the US Open.
The 67th-ranked player became the first Chinese player to knock out a top-5 seed in a Grand Slam. The Shanghai-born player landed the first blow by winning the first set 6-4. Ruud fought back to take the second set, but Zhang did not back down and made a comeback by taking the third set. The match took an interesting turn when Ruud dished out a bagel in the fourth set.
Tempers flared when Zhang left the court for several minutes to take a toilet break before the fifth set. It was seen as a move that disrupted Ruud’s momentum. The Norwegian even complained about it to the chair umpire. He accused him of not enforcing the rules. Zhang, however, took this opportunity to become the victor.
