The Spaniard had defeated Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the previous round to set in stone his quarter-final appearance. Musetti was beat in straight sets by the two-time Grand Slam champion with score 6-2, 6-2. This stellar performance by the World No. 2 made it possible for him to establish his quarter final appearance. The China Open is the first tournament the Spaniard will be taking part in since his upset at the US Open semi-final by Daniil Medvedev, where he was stopped on his title defense campaign.

Along with three Grand Slam final finishes, the Norwegian even made it to the final of the ATP Year end championship final, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. The last couple of years saw him rise to a career-high ranking of World No.2 when he faced Rafael Nadal in the French Open final in 2022.
