After a historic start to the season, things seem to be not going in Iga Swiatek’s direction at all. The World No.1 lost to American Madison Keys in the Round of 16 in Cincinnati in straight sets 3-6,4-6 and needless to say, doesn’t look in form ahead of the all-important US Open. Since winning the French Open, Swiatek has a very poor 6-4 win-loss record and hasn’t managed to win consecutive matches in the last two tournaments he has played.
The Pole had an incredible first half of the season where she created history by winning 37 consecutive matches on the WTA tour- a record in the 21st century. She won 6 consecutive titles which included her second triumph at Roland Garros. Her winning streak ended at Wimbledon in the third round but all went south for her when she decided to play a one-off clay tournament after Wimbledon in Poland. She lost in the quarterfinals of that tournament and hasn’t been able to adapt ever since.
Swiatek will now next directly play the US Open where she’ll headline the draw as the top seed. Such is her lead at the top that even if she loses the first round at Flushing Meadows, she will come out as the World No.1. But given her stature, despite poor form, she will still be one of the favorites to win the tournament. Her poor form is a matter of serious concern though.
Twitter frustrated with Iga Swiatek’s chain of poor outings
Tennis fans on social media were very upset and concerned with Swiatek’s recent form. She has been performing very badly in the last few weeks and being the World No.1, a lot more is expected from her. Many fans took to Twitter to bash Swiatek and show her the reality. Some even called her a slow-court or clay bully.
