Former German tennis star Boris Becker is considered to be one the greatest tennis players of the 20th century. In his career, Becker won a total of six Grand Slam singles titles, 13 masters titles, and an Olympic Gold medal in doubles. After his professional career ended, Becker continued as a media personality and coach.
This year all went south for Becker when he faced charges of tax evasion and hiding assets to avoid paying the debt after being bankrupt in 2017. The prison sentence of two and a half years made the situation worse for him. But for some pre-Christmas good news, Becker got released from prison after serving only 8 months of his original sentence.
The tennis world took a sigh of relief after the news of Becker coming out of prison made headlines. Former world No. 1 Chris Evert was among the first ones to wish Becker well as the German star looks to start afresh. Evert was commenting on an original tweet of tennis analyst Darren Cahill.
Agreeing with the tweet of Cahill, Evert saw the silver lining for Becker after his release. “Totally agree, @darren_cahill well said….He has paid his dues and sounds like he did a lot of soul searching during his time in prison. There is a silver lining in this for him, somewhere I wish him the best..”, Evert wrote.
Boris Becker: career, fall from grace, and future plans

German former world No. 1 tennis player, Boris Becker made a great start to his career when at the age of 17 he won the Wimbledon Championships in 1985. Becker was one of the most dominating stars of his time who ultimately retired with six Grand Slam titles to his name. Becker also won three year-end championships, 13 Masters titles, and an Olympic gold medal in 1992.
German star fell from grace this year when he was convicted of tax fraud and hiding assets and was sentenced to two and a half years of imprisonment. Becker is released from prison after serving 8 months of his original time. Recently Becker appeared in an interview where he talked about his life in prison and the hardships he went through during the sentence.
Now that Becker is released from prison he has multiple options on his plate that include a return to the sport in different capacities such as commentator, mentor, or coach. As he won’t be allowed back into England once he is deported, he can start fresh in his own country. Whatever the future holds for him, the tennis community will not take long to welcome one of its stars back.
