Christopher Eubanks recently asserted that Men’s tennis has yet to see a dominant Black tennis player like Serena Williams. He also said that this was unlike Women’s tennis, where Serena Williams set the narrative for the sport for the better part of two decades. He has also established that the feat of seeing success in tennis seems impossible unless young Black boys see someone do the same.
“It’s tough for a kid to believe they can be something if they don’t see anyone who looks like them doing it, “ said the American. He also emphasized that it is hard to tell a kid that he can do it unless he sees someone actually do it.
While the accomplishments of Serena have indeed changed the game, Eubanks revealed there was no one to look up to for himself in Men’s tennis. But he also said that a bigger group of them were up and coming and so maybe all this was about to change.
“But I think now that there’s a bigger group of us now coming up, little Black boys can turn on the TV and see maybe one of our matches and say, ‘Hey, maybe I want to do that. Maybe I don’t want to play basketball. Maybe I want to give tennis a try,” said the American, as he was hopeful that maybe one day young Black kids would turn their attention to tennis instead.
