Things have been far from ideal for Novak Djokovic this season. He took a bold stand of not taking the Covid vaccine and is paying the price for the same. He was deported from Australia earlier this year due to his vaccination status and hence wasn’t able to defend his Australian Open title. As a result of this, he started his season in March and had a very ordinary first month.

He eventually won the Rome Masters but lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of the French Open, where he was the defending champion. But he bounced back to win a historic 7th Wimbledon title and overtook Roger Federer in the all-time major list with a 21st grand slam title. But he is still a major away from Rafael Nadal’s record of 22 major titles and as things stand, he won’t have an opportunity to gun for a 22nd major title at Flushing Meadows next month.

The US government has made vaccination mandatory to enter the country and despite any stature, there won’t be any exemption which means that Djokovic will not be able to compete. There has been a lot of backlash about the ruling as Covid cases have drastically reduced in the USA and imposing such a rule makes no sense.

Former NFL player Chris Manno recently took to social media to express his anger regarding the vaccination rule which stops Djokovic from competing at the US Open. He called the authorities ‘close-minded dummies’ who fail to realize that they are demeaning their own tournament by not allowing Djokovic to compete.

“These close-minded dummies at the US Open fail to realize they delegitimize their own tournament, leaving the “winner” to look like a placeholder champion when they prohibit a top contender in Novak Djokovic from competing. Let them eat themselves,” he said.
