Coach Patrick Mouratoglou provides insight on the essentials of a champion’s mindset

Patrick Jean André Mouratoglou is a French tennis coach and sports commentator of Greek descent. He coached Serena Williams from June 2012 to 2022. Since Spring 2022, Mouratoglou has been the coach of Simona Halep. Patrick is now married to Ada Obilu.

By the time Mouratoglou started coaching Williams, she had just suffered her first-ever opening-round defeat in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, losing in the first round of the 2012 Roland Garros. Since then, Mouratoglou has guided Williams to her fifth, sixth & seventh Wimbledon titles, the Olympic gold medal, her fourth, fifth & sixth US Open titles, her second and third French Open titles, three consecutive year-end championships titles, her sixth and seventh Australian Open title and lifted her back to No. 1 in the WTA rankings.

In 2015, Stefanos Tsitsipas started training in his tennis academies, as well as being coached by Patrick Mouratoglou and his father Apostolos Tsitsipas. In spring 2022, Simona Halep began training with Mouratoglou. He began coaching rising young phenom Holger Rune in October of 2022 in the absence of Halep from the WTA Tour due to her doping suspension and helped lead him to his first Masters 1000 Title, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final.

Mouratoglou takes to Twitter & Instagram at regular intervals to express his thoughts on the major ATP & WTA matches. His posts range from identifying a player’s flaws to explaining what makes champions special. His recent post on Instagram states, “Champions have to accept the pain when they lose. It’s a drop in the ocean.” He mentions Pete Sampras and Serena Williams and describes how they dealt with losses.

He says Sampras used to stay in bed for two weeks following a loss, cause he used to feel mentally destroyed. He even mentions Tsitsipas, and his body language the following morning after losing to Rafael Nadal in their semifinal clash at the 2019 Australian Open. Mouratoglou further states, “The past is the past, but you can learn from it.

Holger Rune during his fourth-round match against Andrey Rublev

Mouratoglou’s current overachieving student Holger Vitus Nødskov Rune was touted as a dark horse heading into the 2023 Australian Open. Coming off his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Paris last year, Rune steamrolled his opponents in the first three rounds of the tournament. Having not dropped a set, he locked horns with Russian ace Andrey Rublev.

After five sets of tremendous momentum swings, the fourth-round encounter headed into a 10-point tiebreak. Rune looked lethal and in complete control of the match, racing out to a 7-2 lead in the tiebreak. But fate had other plans. A resurgent Rublev saw his return of serve get a lucky bounce into Rune’s territory on match point, earning the Russian a spot in the quarters and leaving Rune heartbroken.

Following his loss, Rune took to Instagram to thank his fans & supporters. In addition to this, he posted a picture of him, captioning it “Count me in for more next year”. Fans are eager to watch the 19-year-old return to the court. He has an extremely promising career ahead of him. And it’s only a matter of time before he establishes himself as a lethal force on the tour.
