The semifinal match between Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova at Flushing Meadows had to be halted in the middle due to some people protesting against climate change. They wore shirts that said ‘End Fossil Fuels’ and started shouting when Gauff had already won the first set and the first game of the second set. 

Upon being asked about her view of the protesters, the American tennis sensation revealed that although she would have liked it if it had not happened during her match, she had no animosity with the protesters. In fact, she went a level further and said that she believed that climate change was real and that they were protesting for a good cause.

“I believe in climate change. I don’t know exactly what they were protesting. I 100% believe there are things we could do better. Would I prefer it not happening in my match? 100%. It is what it is. Moments like this are history defining moments. I wasn’t p*ssed at the protesters,” Coco Gauff said. Coco has always been in on protests. In fact, she had even spoken out on the Black Lives Matter protest three years ago when she was even younger.

“I always speak about preaching what you believe in. It was done in a peaceful way. I can’t get too mad at it.. if that’s what they felt they needed to do to get their voices heard, I can’t really get upset at it,” added the 19-year-old.

Coco Gauff will be facing Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the 2023 US Open. Coco has had a phenomenal season so far this season and she can glorify it even further if she just manages to defeat Sabalenka in the final. The 19-year-old will win her first ever Grand Slam if she manages to do so and it will mark her entry into the elite league of tennis players.
