World No. 7 Coco Gauff took the tennis world by storm when she became the youngest player to win a WTA tournament when she was just 15 years old. Speaking ahead of Wimbledon 2023, the tennis professional looked back on that impressive first WTA title that happened way back in 2019 at the Linz Open in Austria and how she broke her maiden WTA trophy the same day.
Coco Gauff was 15 at the time and still a high school kid. As expected, the young Gauff couldn’t hold her excitement, but little did she know that she would do the unthinkable. As soon as she won the third and final set against Jelena Ostapenko, she couldn’t believe herself, looking up to the sky in disbelief. She quickly ran down to her parents in the stands and hugged them in joy.
After receiving the trophy, she was still in Wonderland and broke the trophy while posing for pictures. She said about the situation, “I actually broke the trophy that same day. Yeah, I remember they were, like, taking pictures. I was trying to hide the broken piece. It’s still not fixed to this day. I tried to fix it with nail glue. The tournament offered to fix it for me. I was just like, You know, it’s a memory; I think I’m going to keep it like that.”
Coco Gauff opened up about her maiden WTA triumph
She recently had an interview where she was asked about how she feels to be among the very few players to have won a WTA title as a lucky loser. Gauff explained that situation and how lucky she felt to get a chance to replay the tournament after losing in the first stage. Maria Sakkari was suffering from some sort of injury at that time, and she had to pull out of the tournament.
Gauff got the chance to replace her, and after getting the opportunity, she made the perfect use of it. for me to play. She talked about the incident, saying, “I remember my dad telling me, I found out 20 or 30 minutes before the match. He was like, You can’t lose twice. We just laughed at it. I don’t think we ever thought we would win the tournament. But, yeah, that was a crazy moment. I didn’t think in Linz, Austria, out of all the places, that would be my first title.”
