Following the discordant opening round match between Coco Gauff and Laura Siegemund, the American condemns Siegemund’s on-court behavior in a press conference. Gauff claims that she was trying to be very patient during the match, but the German was going over the limit too frequently.
While the Umpire did not do anything to stop this behavior, the crowd started to show their disagreement, said Gauff. “Then obviously the crowd started to notice that she was taking long, so you would hear people in the crowd yelling, Time, doing the watch motion,” she revealed.
“As you guys know, you’ve watched my matches, I’m not a fast server. I’m not a slow one. I’m like right in the middle,” emphasized Gauff. The American also said that she would understand if they were playing long rallies, but their rallies were quite short.
While the 19-year-old was happy when the time violation came, she was also upset that her opponent was not ready for the game when it was her serve. Siegemund had also slammed the crowd for treating her like a ‘cheater’.
Laura Siegemund breaks down as she chastises the US Open crowd
Following the controversial first-round match at the US Open between Laura Siegemund and Coco Gauff, the crowd has booed the German, vocalizing the support for their home hero. Siegemund, later on in the post-game presser, slammed the crowd for being completely pro-Gauff.
With Siegemund’s constant violation of the clock, the crowd made it a point to let the German know they disapprove of her ‘cheater’ behavior. She justifies that she only did what she had to do to emerge successful and that she never did anything to offend the audience.
Siegemund faced a crushing defeat against the home hero with a score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Though she played a tough game in the first set, it was ultimately Gauff who had the better end of the deal.
