World No. 4 Coco Gauff has no plans to slow down anytime soon. The teen has stormed into the quarte-finals of the 2024 Australian Open. Opening the day’s proceedings at the Rod Laver Arena today, the American overcame Magdalena Frech 6-1, 6-2 in just 63 minutes.

Frech was all over the place and Gauff made the most of it. She did not allow the Pole to settle at all and controlled the match right from the get-go. She is now in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park for the first time in her career. Cherry on the top, she is yet to drop a set at the Grand Slam this year.

Following her win, she commented about her father’s superstitions which keep him away from her box. Corey Gauff, father and coach of the teen, was nowhere to be seen in the stands. The US Open champ revealed how he is unlikely to return as she won the Grand Slam while her father watched from a distance.

Gauff was questioned about the transition of her taking the big decisions instead of her father. As she matures on the Tour, Gauff Sr. has allowed his daughter to decide things for herself. Not only has he given her liberty, but the teen disclosed how he remains ready to defend her at all times.

Not really, no. My dad naturally - not protective, not even make decisions, but naturally he'll just be protective and be like, I can say no for you if you want me to. Or, I can always be the bad guy. Whenever he needs to be the bad guy, he'll just be like, Blame it on me. He doesn't really care what people think about him.

Coco Gauff rejects the chance of any family conflict over making big decisions

Speaking further about her relationship with her parents, and especially her father, Coco Gauff commented on how she was always protected. The presence of an assertive figure over her helped her grow and she never felt it was wrong.

The teen admitted she still has a lot to learn from her father. Following her title in New York, she has started doing the off-court activities all by herself. The credit for which she gave directly to her father.

Now he kind of stepped back in the role and just saying like, I'm here if you need me, but I'm not going to make decisions for you, but I can give you advice, all of that. There's never been pushback. I think that's just how they always raised me, slowly letting me see the behind-the-scenes stuff and teaching me about it.

Following the win over Magdalena Frech, the American will now take on Marta Kostyuk. The Ukrainian had an easy win over qualifier Maria Timofeeva defeating her 6-2, 6-1. It will just be the second career meeting between the two youngsters and the first at Grand Slams. Kostyuk is 7-2 for the season while Gauff reaches the quarter-final with a 9-0 record.
