Coco Gauff into her maiden Australian Open semifinal

Ugly or beautiful, a win is a win and Coco Gauff probably took it this way. The maiden semifinal qualification at the Australian Open would have cheered up the 19-year-old after a bad day in the office. Gauff did incredibly well to come back from a 1-5 deficit in the first set and to win it in the tiebreaker.

She, however, could not capitalize on the lead she had in the second set. Gauff served for the match at 5-3 in the second set but was foiled as Kostyuk fired a couple of winners before she eventually won the second set in a tiebreak. The scores were level and many feared an anticlimax at the Rod Laver Arena.

But Coco Gauff ensured nothing of that sort happened as she comfortably won the third set. Gauff raced to a 5-0 lead with Kostyuk struggling to keep her shape and avoid unforced errors. The Ukrainian made a brief comeback as Kostyuk took the next two games.

Nevertheless, the reigning US Open champion, having gotten her rhythm back, was quick to close the set by landing a service winner in the eighth game. The 19-year-old entered the semifinals with this win and will most probably meet Aryna Sabalenka there.
