Coco Gauff is ready to take on the world at the Australian Open 2023. The American took the tennis world by storm by playing in the final of the 2022 French Open. She also played in the final of the 2022 Roland Garros doubles event with compatriot Jessica Pegula. However, she could not win any of the titles. Her performances in the year made everyone stand up and take notice.
Coco’s rankings helped her gain an entry into the 2022 WTA Finals in both singles and doubles. However, she could not perform well in both events and ended her impressive season on a sad note.
She started this season well by winning the 2023 ASB Classic tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, last Sunday. It must have given her immense confidence before the start of the first Grand Slam of the year. Hence, she gave a stern warning to her competitors.
The Australian Open shared an excerpt from Coco Gauff’s pre-tournament media conference on social media.
“There’s a joke that my mom has. She is like, ‘You don’t have that grown woman strength yet. You’ll know when you get it.’ I can’t put a percent on it, but I know the best is yet to come for me. And I think that’s just looking at other players and looking at when they are winning most of their titles. So, I think I have a long way to go. I’m not as matured as other players,” she said.
Coco Gauff will start her campaign at the Australian Open on January 16 against Katerina Siniakova in the first round.
Coco Gauff’s chances in Australian Open 2023
The American is pumped up to begin her journey at the Australian Open. Her first opponent will be World No.47 Katerina Siniakova in the first round. She is the current Australian Open doubles champion. However, it is expected that Coco Gauff will sail through.
Her challenges will increase as she may have to face either Emma Raducanu or Tamara Korpatsch in the second round. Defeating the British player can be a daunting task for the 18-year-old. However, the kind of form the American is in, she is expected to win this one. In the third round Chinese sensation Qinwen Zheng will test her. If she passes this challenge, Paula Badosa will be her opponent in the fourth round.
However, the toughest challenge will be 2022 French Open champion Iga Swiatek or 2022 Australian Open finalist Danielle Collins. She will meet either in the Quarter-Finals. If she is able to win against her opponent in this round, either Jessica Pegula or Maria Sakkari may possess another great challenge before her in the semi-finals. She may have to play against either Caroline Garcia or Ons Jabeur or Aryna Sabalneka in the final to clinch her maiden Grand Slam title.
