The dynamic duo of Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula have secured their place in the WTA Finals 2023 doubles event, becoming the first duo to achieve it this year. They are the first-placed doubles team in the WTA rankings as of now and it was only a matter of time before they officially made it to the WTA Final, which is going to be held in Cancun, Mexico, from 29th October to 5th November.
The WTA Finals is hands-down one of the most significant tournaments in women’s tennis and is held annually after the 4 majors (Grand Slams) are completed. Based on the players’ performance and the points they have made throughout the year, they are ranked by WTA and the top 8 players from singles and the top 8 teams from doubles make it to the WTA Finals.
In 2022, the WTA Finals singles event was won by Caroline Garcia of Spain as she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the final, while the doubles event was won by the team of Veronika Kudermetova and Elise Mertens as they defeated Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova in the final.
Earlier this week, the WTA also announced the first four players to make it to the WTA Finals 2023. Aryna Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina have all made it to the WTA Finals. Coco Gauff has achieved an incredible feat by being the first to make it to the 2023 WTA Finals, both in the singles and doubles events. Jessica Pegula is expected to make it to the finals soon, as she is currently the 4th-ranked player in the world.
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula’s achievements as doubles partners
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are co-ranked as World No. 1 in the WTA doubles ranking. They became the first team to be co-ranked at the top spot after Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova achieved the same feat in 2019.
Coco Gauff was earlier ranked No. 1 in the doubles rankings back in August as well but it is the first time for Jessica Pegula.
The duo has made it to four finals in 2023, all at the WTA-1000s level. Out of that, they won two—the Miami Open and the Doha Open. They ended as runners-up in the Madrid and Rome Opens. Thus, they have plenty of achievements to back their ranking and spot in the WTA Finals.
