American teen sensation Coco Gauff scripted history on Saturday as she beat to-be World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka to lift her maiden Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open. The 19-year-old secured a win in three sets. While Gauff was firing winners for fun on the court, she did not stop even when she got off it.

The 19-year-old took a jibe at her critics on social media who claimed that a lot of unnecessary hype was built around her, saying that she keeps tabs on every troll. Gauff talked about social media trolls in her post-match press conference.

The 19-year-old American who became the first American teenager to win the US Open crown since Serena Williams in 1999 said she knows what people are writing about her on Twitter (now X). Gauff then joked that she knows all usernames and would now want to see their reaction as she won the title.

“I felt like people were like ‘it was all hype.’ I see the comments. People think I don’t see, but I’m very aware of Tennis Twitter. I know y’all’s usernames. I know who’s talking trash. I can’t wait to look on Twitter right now,” said the 19-year-old American.

Coco Gauff who is among few notables to have won the US Open title in the women’s singles category under 20 years of age, said it was a shocking moment for her to beat a world-class player in Aryna Sabalenka and overcome her heartbreaking loss at The Championships. The 19-year-old was sobbing inconsolably after she toppled her Belarusian opponent.

“I feel like I’m a little bit in shock in this moment,” Gauff said after her win. “That French Open loss was a heartbreak for me, but I realize that God puts you through tribulations and trials, and that makes this moment even sweeter than I could’ve imagined. The 19-year-old also talked about the hard work it took to become the champion. Gauff said that she knew that if she did not give it all, she had no shot at winning the title.

It is worth mentioning that Gauff lost to Iga Swiatek in the French Open quarterfinals and at The Championships. She could not even progress to the second round. However, the 19-year-old turned it around, winning the Washington Open and then the Cincinnati Masters, her maiden WTA 1000 title. The American then carried the momentum into the year’s last Grand Slam and converted it into a title.
