American tennis sensation Coco Gauff got visibly annoyed by her coach Brad Gilbert’s advice during her Round of 16 match of the ongoing US Open against Caroline Wozniacki. Gauff won the first set against the very experienced Caroline Wozniacki without any struggle but it was in the second set that the 33-year-old made a stunning comeback, causing Coco Gauff to lose her composure.
Many fans on the internet noticed during the match that although Coco Gauff was on the opposite side, her coach, Brad Gilbert, was constantly shouting advice, and it was clearly done to mess with Caroline Wozniacki’s focus. However, it clearly took a toll on the utterly annoyed Coco Gauff as well. “Control more of the center of the court. You need to be aggressive,” said Gilbert to Coco in the middle of her set to which Coco replied, “Please Stop”.
The more Caroline Wozniacki got back into the game, the more tense Coco Gauff seemed. In fact, she made plenty of unnecessary blunders that cost her very heavily in the second set. Although she saved a number of break points in the end, Coco Gauff made 22 unforced errors in the second set. Moreover, Caroline won many first serves. Coco Gauff had to face at least one break point in every game of the second set.
However, the 20-year-old got back into the game in the third, i.e. the deciding set where she kept her calm and went on the front foot from the very beginning, giving Caroline little time to make a comeback. Irrespective of the result, Caroline Wozniacki, who made her Grand Slam return after 3 years at the US Open, deserves credit for this performance.
Coco Gauff matches Serena Williams’ record after beating Caroline Wozniacki
Coco Gauff beat Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the Round of 16 after a sensational battle to qualify for the quarterfinal. With this, she has now become the first American teenager to reach back-to-back US Open quarterfinals since Serena Williams. It would be apt to say that she is following in the footsteps of the legend pretty well.
Coco Gauff has been phenomenal in the tournament so far and is one of the favorites to lift the title. She is expected to face Iga Swiatek in the quarterfinals if the Pole manages to beat Jelena Ostapenko in her RO16 match. Coco defeated the World No. 1 just recently in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Open for the first time ever and would like to repeat that here.
