Childhood buddies Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis emerge victorious at the 2022 Atlanta Open as the pair defeated compatriots Jason Kubler and John Peers 7-6(4), 7-5 in what was an all-Australian final at the event in Atlanta. Kyrgios and Kokkinakis were the second seed in the tournament and came through on their seeding as the duo move closer to qualifying for the ATP Finals at the end of the season.
Nick and Thanasi had to play their semi-finals and finals on the same day as rain forced an early wrap on Saturday in Atlanta with the semis clash pushed to Sunday. The Australians defeated Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock in the semi-finals in a crunch 3-setter with the second and third sets decided in tiebreakers. Nevertheless, Nick and Thanasi were prepared and their coordination was again on display as they won both the matches to lift their second title of the season.
“A new experience playing two matches in one day”: Nick Kyrgios
Having won the 2022 Australian Open, the duo had to miss the 2022 Wimbledon Championships as Nick withdrew his name at the last moment in order to focus on his singles campaign as he finished as the runner-up. The pair will however be more regular as confirmed by Thanasi who has almost made it official that the ‘Special K’s’ will be playing the 2022 US Open Doubles and other Tour events to give themselves the chance to play in the Year-End Championships.
“Obviously Atlanta is a special place. Won the singles title here [in 2016] and now the doubles. Crowd’s amazing and it was a new experience playing two matches in one day as well for a title. Me and Kokky were pretty resilient and obviously no singles this week, but confidence is at an all-time high in doubles,” said Kyrgios after winning the title.
“Stoked to have won the Atlanta doubles title with Nick. It’s always a pleasure playing with him. Second title for the year and I think we’re getting better. It’s been a great week here, a good way to start off the [American] summer in Atlanta for the US Open and hopefully, we can keep it rolling,” added Thanasi.
