“Imagine the outrage if Stef did this”- Carlos Alcaraz caught getting on court coaching during match against Stefanos Tsitsipas

Carlos Alcaraz caught receiving on-court coaching

World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas and World No. 11 Carlos Alcaraz played out a thrilling match in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Barcelona Open. It was the second meeting between Stef and Carlitos with the teenager winning once again claiming a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win in a 2-hour and 12-minute battle.

With the two players going back and forth against each other, it was a high-intensity game and eventually became a controversial match after a couple of incidents between the players. With the crowd supporting the local boy Alcaraz, it was a hostile environment for the Greek whose every action was being closely watched upon.

After the two players split the first two sets, it was all to play for in the third set. Alcaraz took an extended break to which he later admitted to doing it to only break Stef’s momentum who had just clinched a thrilling second set and was riding high on confidence. In the first game of the third set, with Alcaraz having two break points, he went to the sides to get his towel and was caught receiving instructions and coaching from his box that was very close to the place where the teen had placed the towel.

With the incident caught on camera, there is very little that can be argued in defence of the Alcaraz camp. With Tsitsipas often the victim of on-court coaching, these incidents are monitored very closely but with the teenager escaping without any punishment, tennis fans were not happy with the partiality done towards the 23-year old Greek No. 1.
