Defending champion Daniil Medvedev suffered a 2nd consecutive defeat against 2nd seed Jannik Sinner in a nail-biting finale of the ATP 500 Vienna Open on Sunday. The Italian defeated the World No.3 7-6(7), 4-6, 6-3 in just over 3 hours to lift his 10th career title. This was the 4th final clash between the pair, with spoils shared between the duo. With the win, Sinner has improved his head-to-head against the Russian to 2-6.

The Italian no.1 saved two set points in the first set. The World No.4 acknowledged his mental composure in crucial moments in the post-match interview. He said:

I think we both served very well the first set, I managed somehow to get back on serve when he was a break up, because I felt like he was serving really good. I found a way in the first set.

Things got interesting at the trophy presentation ceremony as Medvedev popped open the Champagne and sprayed it on the Italian as Sinner revelled in title glory. Here’s the video of the title celebrations:-

Further talking about the match, Sinner said that in the second set, he let the Russian get more into the game as he dictated the match while the Italian had to “hustle a little bit”. But, fortunately for the 22-year-old, he stepped it up big-time in the final sets as he capitalised on the several break points he earned. The World No.4 remarked:

Obviously to finish the match, it was really a mental thing, but I’m very happy about how I managed today and very happy for another title.

Daniil Medvedev hopes for more final clashes against Jannik Sinner in the future

Speaking in the post-match interview, Daniil Medvedev said:

Big congrats to Jannik. It was a tough match, at one moment I thought I maybe could get you. I didn’t manage to do it. As I said already three times this year, hopefully we can play more finals, maybe even this year. Big congrats to you, you’re playing great, finishing the year strong.

Earlier this month, the pair faced off in the final of the China Open where the young Italian got better of Medvedev for the first time in his seventh try. The title clash in Vienna was the 4th final clash of the year between the pair after Rotterdam, Miami and Beijing.

Both Sinner and Medvedev have already qualified for the ATP Finals to be played in Turin, Italy. Next up, the pair will play in the final Masters tournament of the calendar at Paris Masters. The duo have received a first-round bye and will start their singles campaign with their respective second-round clashes on Tuesday. Interestingly, Sinner will also take part in the doubles draw alongside 3-time Grand Slam champion Stanislas Wawrinka. The pair face off against the Serbian duo of 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic.
