Daniil Medvedev showered praise on fellow Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva in a recent presser. The 16-year-old teenager has been turning heads over the last couple of months, by qualifying for the main draws of French Open and Wimbledon. The Russian has now marched into the third round of the Championships, where she faces Anastasia Potapova.

Medvedev acknowledged the youngster’s feats by stating that she was making it through the qualifying rounds of several tournaments. At the age of just 16, Andreeva already has some big wins under her belt, something which has impressed the current World No.3. The 2021 US Open champion drew similarities between her and the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune.

Although Medvedev has not interacted with her on a personal level, he congratulates her when she wins her matches. “We haven’t spoken much. When I see her, we say hi or congrats when she wins matches. I would say we don’t know each other on a personal level. I didn’t see a lot of her matches, but I saw some,” said Medvedev in the press conference when asked about the young sensation.

Daniil Medvedev believes that Mirra Andreeva could be the next big thing in tennis, given her recent breakthrough. He believes that her ability to beat higher-ranked players is quite sensational. However, she will need to be at her absolute best if she is to make deep runs at Grand Slam events.

“It’s been already a lot of tournaments where she’s passing quallies, making deep runs. That’s amazing because that’s kind of why Alcaraz, Sinner, Rune are amazing also. At a young age, you can make sensations, you can beat top guys, but to be able to go deep in these tournaments, it’s very tough. For the moment, she seems like a very big thing coming, but we never know,” said Medvedev.

Daniil Medvedev marched into the fourth round of Wimbledon, as he defeated Marton Fucsovics in four sets on Saturday. The Russian dropped the first set, however; he dominated proceedings for the rest of the match. He faces Jiri Lehecka in the fourth round, who defeated Tommy Paul in a grueling five-set encounter.

As for Mirra Andreeva, she is yet to commence her third-round encounter against Anastasia Potapova. The match has been shifted to the next day, following persistent rain delays. The 16-year-old enters the match as the favorite against her fellow countrywomen.
