Daniil Medvedev earns a victory after a marathon match in the semis of the Australian Open. The Russian was up against Alexander Zverev on Friday with the ticket to the finals on the line.
The German made a steady start to the proceedings, winning the first two sets of the match. Medvedev made a superb comeback after being two sets down to clinch the next three sets and the match to reach his third Australian Open finals.
After the match in the on-court interview with Jim Courier, the World No.3 said,
Well first of all we say third time lucky. So let’s see. I can say by experience, it’s not always like this. Hopefully here it works. I don’t know if you guys in Australia have this phrase.
The Russian was referring to his third appearance in the finals of the Australian Open, losing the previous two times in 2021 and 2022 to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, respectively.
Medvedev also spoke about the Rod Laver Arena being not the best court for him in terms of appearance and self-esteem.
I’d say this court is not my best court in terms of my performance and self-esteem on court. That’s why many times I had to dig deep. So, I’d be the happiest man on the planet. But for this I need to play pretty well and win three sets on Sunday.
Daniil Medvedev eyes maiden Australian Open title after winning a marathon match against Alexander Zverev
The World No.3 has reached the finals of the Grand Slam six times, and this will be the first time for him when he will face an opponent other than Nole or Rafa. Thus, he will fancy his chances of winning the Australian Open on Sunday, especially after beating an in-form Alexander Zverev in a superb fashion.
However, his opponent Jannik Sinner will also be eying his maiden Grand Slam title and has been in superb form too. In his road to the finals of the tournament, Sinner has just dropped one set and that too against the defending champion. Thus, the showdown between the two players will be one for the ages.
