After the match, the Russian revealed the reason for his change in shot. Physically tired, he intended for a drop shot, but out of luck, he pulled out a blinder shot.

I actually could not run anymore for 40 rallies like we did in the first set. So I was like ‘Okay, let’s go more aggressive. If it doesn’t work out, I tried.’ I tried what I thought would work.
Said Medvedev to the AO press after the match.

Notably, his aggressive approach did not work out, which made him serve well, and out of a little bit of luck, he managed a blinder couple of shots to win the set and take it to a final set.

Intending to drop the ball, he sliced it and prayed for it to just cross the net. The ball did cross the net and was far out of Zverev’s reach.

He had faced Zverev over 18 times before, but this match turned out to be one of his best matches. Pouncing back from almost losing, the No. 3 seed beat the German to get his 12th win over him. After a sluggish start, Medvedev pulled up his socks to inflict a five-set victory

The World No. 3 thrashed Zverev 5-7, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 6-3 to make it to his third Australian Open final. Having lost both his final appearances, the Russian would hope that a third time’s the charm.

Fortunately for him, luck seems to be on his side, as his biggest competitor, Novak Djokovic, is out of the tournament, courtesy of Jannik Sinner. With the biggest obstacle out of his way, Medvedev might be knocking on the doors of his first Australian Open title. However, the young Italian seems to be in good shape. With that being said, a much-awaited final is on its way.
