Former WTA player Andrea Petkovic has lamented that too little attention is given to Daniil Medvedev due to the recent rise of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. Medvedev, who has remained at the Top-5 in the World ranking is becoming less favorite in tournaments this season.
For context, Medvedev made history in February 2022 when he became the first player apart from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Andy Murray to be No.1 in the ATP rankings after 18 years. The Russian has since excelled, winning 20 titles including a US Open.

However, recent years have seen his fame depleted. With Carlos Alcaraz winning Wimbledon last year and Jannik Sinner winning his maiden major at the Australian Open, Medvedev seems to be in oblivion.
This season, Sinner and Alcaraz denied the Russian star his two titles of the season. Sinner defeated him at the Australian Open in January, while Alcaraz beat him to win the Indian Wells title. At the Miami Open, despite Medvedev being the defending champion, Sinner and Alcaraz stand taller in the favorites chart.
This recent narrative made Andrea Petkovic lament on a recent episode of the Rennae Stubbs Tennis Podcast. The WTA legend said that too little attention gets paid to Medvedev, a perennial top-five player.
Medvedev is in the worst position, he is a big star but he has always been number two or three. First, there was Novak Djokovic, now there is Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz and this is a problem…Even if he will be number one in the world, as long as Sinner or Alcaraz are there, he will always be next. This is all a shame.Petkovic said
However, Medvedev would be aiming to win the Miami Open after suffering two final and semifinal defeats in three months.
Daniil Medvedev aiming to defend Miami Open title
Daniil Medvedev showed quality to beat a resilient Cameron Norrie as he aims to defend his Miami Open title. The Russian won the British star 7-5, 6-1 at the Hard Rock Stadium. He will face Dominik Koepfer in the round of 16.

Meanwhile, Koepfer has been in form in Miami. The German defeated Sebastian Baez and Ugo Humbert to reach the third round of the Florida-based tournament. But, Medvedev might prove to be a strong opponent for him, if the Russian play at his best game.
Medvedev is yet to win a title this season despite reaching the semifinals of three tournaments. He will be relishing the Miami Open title before the European clay swing begins next month.
