World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev had a dream start against Hungarian star Attila Balazs in his first-round fixture at the US Open, winning the match in straight sets. But on the other hand, the fourth seed Holger Rune bowed out of the competition right in the very first round against Roberto Carballes Baena, leaving the whole tennis world shocked. Many think that the court assigned to the Dane played a huge role in the loss, considering Rune’s seeding in the competition which is much higher.
Rune was absolutely dejected and frustrated after the match having bottled a chance to lift a Grand Slam in what was the last Slam of the year. Medvedev felt that the US Open management could not be blamed for assigning Rune to Court 5 and not on the Arthur Ashe Stadium as there were many high-profile games scheduled on the same day. He said, “You always have to see it from perspective. Arthur Ashe, I think it was Tiafoe & Djokovic. That was 2 Americans playing each other, so nothing to say.”
He added that Rune must not be disheartened by this and rather must focus on his game. “Armstrong was Tsitsipas. More Grand Slam experience than Holger. 2 or 3 finals. I can understand his frustration. I can understand why the tournament put him there… If he continues the way he’s playing now, soon he’s only going to play on big courts. If Holger stays where he is & plays as good as he does, soon he’s gonna play more on bigger courts.”, said Medvedev.
What went wrong for Holger Rune during the first-round match?
While many would have expected Holger Rune to go the distance at the last Slam of the year, the Dane has unfortunately bowed out of the competition against a much more inferior opponent. He lost the match by a scoreline of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 against the Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena. Rune had only won 30 receiving points compared to the 48 won by Baena.
Apart from that, Rune committed 4 double faults, making only 3 points which summed up his day. He was not at his hundred percent on the night leading him to commit a lot of unforced errors giving Baena a chance to punish him. He was not as clinical as he had been all season committing just 2 aces over the course of the entire match with all eyes on the Paris Masters where he will defend his title this year.
